Hay and straw should be protected from the elements by storing under cover in a building that doesn’t leak and has good ventilation. Choose a building on an elevated, well-drained site.
Build stacks on firm, dry, level, freely draining ground away from potential fire hazards.
Hay and straw are highly flammable so store in a separate building away from vehicles, machinery, or any type of heat source and fire accelerants or flammable fuels or fertilisers.
If your hay or straw is stored outdoors, cover with tarpaulin on a slope for drainage and to keep out moisture and light – sunlight bleaches hay, causing it to lose nutritional value.
We bale both hay and straw at below 15% moisture for optimum quality.
There are two cuts in a typical year. The first is usually in June or early July when the grass has had plenty of time to grow and mature. The second cut is usually 8-9 weeks later. The second cut is lower yield and higher protein.
All our hay and straw is from the current harvest season.
